Webster City teacher honored with the Golden Apple Award.

 A Webster City teacher was honored Tuesday afternoon with the prestigious Golden Apple Award from WHO-TV and Allied Insurance. Katie Olson is a special education teacher at Sunset Heights Elementary. A school assembly to honor Olson was held when officials from Allied Insurance and WHO-TV presented her with the award. Olson said her greatest reward is watching her kids get excited about learning. She has been teaching at Sunset Heights for the past five years. The Golden Apple Award is marking its 20th year. It is Iowa's most revered award for teaching excellence given to one deserving teacher each month during the school year. To nominate a teacher, students write letters and e-mail to WHO television explaining why their teacher deserves the recognition. Each of the thousands of letters are received each year is read and judged. Each month, one lucky letter is chosen and a school assembly is arranged with the help of the school's principal. The winning teacher receives a beautiful  water filled glass Golden Apple as a lasting commemoration of their achievement. Viewers can see Olson's story and her reaction to winning the Golden Apple on Channel 13 News Today in Iowa on Friday,March 21 between 5 and 5:30 a.m. It will also appear on the WHO-TV website.
