Hamilton County honors the memory of former Supervisor Dick Barkema.

A former Hamilton County Supervisor was honored Tuesday morning with the planting of a tree on the grounds of the Hamilton County Social Service building on Fairmeadow Drive in Webster City. The tree was planted in memory of Dick Barkema of Jewell who served as Supervisor from 1995 until his death in 2004 at the age of 57. Barkema was instrumental in creating a housing initiative for people with disabilities in Hamilton County. Former Hamilton County Social Service Director Sharon Perry delivered a speech saluting Barkema and his work for the people of Hamilton County as a county supervisor. Others attending Tuesday's ceremony were the members of the Friends Forever Social Education Center, Hamilton County Social Services staff, the family of Dick Barkema and Supervisors Doug Bailey, Wes Sweedler and David Young.
